Subject: [OA] Models of The Parthenon and The Alhambra

Hello everyone. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Judith Leitner, and I am one of the founders of The Toronto Heschel School in Toronto, Ontario. We are an arts-based, multi-sensory private day-school, very serious about the Arts as teaching and learning tools. My official title is "Director of Integrated Arts"; essentially I am the Visual Arts teacher and consultant to the staff on ways of using The Arts in designing curriculum and classroom formats, etc.
I have been using the Art of Origami for many years - it is truly one of the most extraordinary of artforms, but also extraordinary as a teaching and diagnostic tool. Needless to say, my students are passionate about Origami, from J.K. to Grade 8, and can never get enough. I could easily write a doctoral dissertation on Origami as a Learning Tool.
I've also integrated pop-up art into my teaching, but not as consistently.
I would like to teach Origamic Architecture to my Grade 7's - as part of their Ancient Civilizations program,
and Gr. 8 students - as part of their study of The New World. I am desperately searching for Origamic Architecture models of THE PARTHENON (for Grade 7) and THE ALHAMBRA PALACE (gr. 8). I can't seem to find specific info on these in the vast literature and information you have posted. Can you please help/direct me?
I look forward to meeting you electronically. You are an illustrious group of artists, and I love the work you are doing! Thankyou.
Judith Leitner

Hi Judith, welcome to the OA list! my name is Marivi and I also use OA to teach math to my 8 and 9 grade students, they enjoy doing it a lot. I think Prof Chatani has The Parthenon in one of his books and one card called Court of Lions. I also desingned the Patio de los Leones and is displayed at the American Craft Museum in New York. You can see the picture at my site
http://www.geocities.com/marivi_2/index.html.
If you need more information about the Alhambra I have some that I found in internet. Please contact me privately. Regards, Marivi.

Judith,
"Alhambra Granada Court of Lions" is on page 44 in Paper Magic - Pop-up Paper
Crafts ©1988 by Masahiro Chatani, Ondorisha, ISBN 0-87040-757-0, 92 pages, 53
patterns.

"Parthenon" is on page 78 in Origamic Architecture of Masahiro Chatani ©1983
by Masahiro Chatani, Shokokusha, ISBN 4-395-27011-5, 111 patterns, 128 pages,
and also on page 18 in Pattern Sheets of Origamic Architecture ©1984 by
Masahiro Chatani, Shokokusha, ISBN 4-395-27012-3, 30 patterns, 86 pages.

FYI, Gerry Stormer's site (
http://members.home.net/gstormer/) has a section listing the contents of
each of the OA books he owns. It may take a little time to go through all
the listings, but this is a very useful resource if you are searching for
particular patterns.

BTW, your earlier e-mail to me contained only the following text:

Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com, so I was unable to respond to whatever you wanted to discuss with me; I assume you were requesting the same info as you posted to the [OA] maillist. I hope the above information will be helpful to you. Best regards, K. Professor Chatani's "Parthenon" pattern appears in the out-of-print book _Patterns of Origamic Architecture_ ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=4395270123/arizonaaikidoA .) You may be able to track down a copy through a specialty store or rare book search. The "Alhambra Granada Court of Lions" pattern appears in _Paper Magic: Pop-Up Paper Craft_ ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0870407570/arizonaaikidoA .) This one is still commonly available. I hope that helps! I think it is wonderful that you teach OA to children. I am sure we can look forward to an explosion of exciting new OA pieces from your students as they develop into full-fledged origamic architects. I sent my message a few hours ago but, it doesn't seem to have gone out to the list (it was addressed correctly.) So, I just re-sent it. Is anyone else having problems posting? Andrew Crawford Andrew@Evermore.com --------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 14 Aug 2001 22:18:46 +0200 From: "Erik & Ingrid" To: Subject: [OA] Dear Judith, I too welcome you to the mail list. It is very good to hear that more and more Origamic Architecture is used as learning material at schools. I am an Origamic Architecture Designer from the Netherlands and like Marivi my work is recently displayed in the American Craft Museum in New York. Maybe you like to know that in March next year there will be a book published from my hands with patterns of well known Dutch and Belgium buildings. Maybe this is interesting for your school. The book will be in Dutch only but this should not be a problem for so many books of Prof. Chatani are not translated into the English language either and still people all over the world are making card from his patterns; the OA principal of the patterns are universal. It is very nice meeting you and I hope we will here from you again. There was a type of paper I used in the beginning and now am having a hard time getting. It was Cansons Student Light weight 80lb. It had a picture in blue on the front of the pad of a person sitting under a tree and drawing. Any help in tracking down this paper would be appreciated. Thank you Jeff Kauai Hawaii
