The Flinn Foundation Awards Arizona Opera with $400,000 Grant

Will Directly Impact Artistic Quality

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 2, 1999

At the March 30th Board of Trustees Meeting, General Director David Speers announced that Arizona Opera is a recipient of $400,000 grant from The Flinn Foundation. Arizona Opera will receive its grant over four years to improve the artistic quality and long term stability of the company's ensemble components, the Arizona Opera Chorus and the Arizona Opera Orchestra.

"We have had a long and successful relationship with The Flinn Foundation," said General Director David Speers. "As a major participant in Arizona Opera's growth and success, I am thrilled that they are once again investing in our vision and mission for the future."

Distinctively unique because of its two city rehearsal and performance schedules, Arizona Opera has established a long range artistic plan and identified initiatives to include new leadership and supervision of the orchestra and chorus, the development of an audition process, the addition of orchestra and chorus musicians, and the development of stage craft for the Chorus.

Specifically, innovations for the Arizona Opera Orchestra will include the engagement a Principal Guest Conductor who will provide consistency through leadership, and will act as artistic consultant to the General Director. In addition, one rehearsal per production will be added and the size of the ensemble will be augmented for full orchestration of repertoire. Under new leadership by John Massaro, the Arizona Opera Chorus will also increase its roster, and through a new skill development program, will have the opportunity to attend stagecraft workshops which include acting, choreography, language, stage fighting.

As a prior beneficiary of The Flinn Foundation since 1992, Arizona Opera debuted a complete Ring Cycle in Flagstaff, added a fifth production to our season, and developed strong collaborative relationships with other performing arts organizations including Ballet Arizona and The Phoenix Symphony. These past successes, afforded through the generosity of the Flinn Foundation, have posed Arizona Opera to be one of America's most successful opera companies in North America.
