He attributed the record breaking advance sales to the increased enthusiasm and excitement for the upcoming 1998-99 Season. This new record of $1.5 million represents 9,610 season tickets. Subscriptions will continue to be sold until after the November opera and expectations are high that 10,000 will be reached by mid-November. Arizona Opera will present five operas: Lucia di Lammermoor, Die Fledermaus, Aida, Andrea Chénier, and La Bohème "The soaring ticket sales indicate that we are going to have a spectacular season at the Box Office. We look forward to welcoming back renewing subscribers and seeing all the new patrons at Arizona Opera. This will be a remarkable year," commented General Director David Speers. In addition to the season sales, single tickets were released to the general public on September 14th. Remarking on the overwhelming requests for tickets, Laura Schairer, Director of Marketing, said "We are presenting several 'blockbusters' this season and are ecstatic about the interest at the box office. When we released single tickets to the general public at 10:00 a.m., within 6 hours over $40,000 in single tickets were sold. With this advance enthusiasm, Arizona Opera can look forward to sold out houses this season."
