Samuel Ramey to sing recital to benefit Arizona Opera

November 1998 performances will inaugurate new "Great Singer Series" for Arizona Opera.

Arizona Opera is pleased to announce a new concert performance series, Great Singers Series, that will bring internationally acclaimed American bass Samuel Ramey to Arizona. With a diversified recital program in November, Mr. Ramey will sing a mixture of operatic arias and contemporary favorites. He will appear one night in both Tucson and Phoenix. This benefit concert is a fund raising event for Arizona Opera and is expected to generate $225,000 for the company.

General Director David Speers remarked, "Samuel Ramey's tremendous talent and stage presence have appealed to audiences around the world and now, for the first time, Arizona. This is the first presentation of The Great Singers Series and I am proud to bring such an internationally recognized singer to Arizona audiences."

Samuel Ramey's performance credits span the world. He has appeared regularly on the stages of the world's great opera houses, including La Scala, Covent Garden, the Vienna Opera, the Paris Opera, the New York City Opera, the San Francisco Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera. Seen regularly on television, Mr. Ramey has appeared on Live From Lincoln Center, Live From the Met, PBS' Gala of Stars and Great Performances, CBS Sunday Morning News, and the BBC. Accompanying Mr. Ramey is renowned pianist Warren Jones. Mr. Jones frequently performs with many of today's best-known artists including Marilyn Horne, Carol Vaness, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, and Denyce Graves.

Gala Dinner/Reception

Both concerts will feature a reception/dinner following the performances to benefit Arizona Opera. Guests will have an opportunity to meet both Samuel Ramey and Warren Jones. Ticket prices are $150 per person. Patrons may make reservations by calling the Arizona Opera offices.

Ticket Information

Performance and Reception tickets will be made available to Arizona Opera subscribers on August 17, 1998. Remaining concert/reception tickets will be made available to the general public on September 14, 1998 at 10:00 am by calling the Arizona Opera Box Offices.
