Turandot
  • Turandot was first performed on April 25, 1926.

  • The opera is based on a fairy tale by Carlo Gozzi.

  • 43 instruments were used in the first performance: 10 1st violin, 8 2nd violin, 6 viola, 4 violincello, 2 bass, piccolo, 2 flute, 2 oboe, 2 clarinet, bass clarinet, 2 bassoon, double bassoon, 4 horn, 3 trumpet, 3 trombone, bass trombone, timpani, percussion, celeste, 2 harp, organ, (on stage) 2 alto sax, 6 trumpet, bass trombone, gong, and a wooden snare drum.

Production Facts

  • Dry Ice and Chemical smoke are used to create fog.

  • 35mm Slides and Projectors throw images against a backdrop.

  • It takes a crew of more than 29 people over 33 hours to set up the sets for Turandot .

  • Three 45 foot trucks are required to transport materials for the set.

  • All told, 115 cast members (doubles and chorus) make up the show.
