Some Interesting Information about the Creation of Of Mice and Men

  • The opera took five years for Floyd to write.

  • In early copies of the opera, Floyd had inserted George in a brothel, which he later cut.

  • Curley's Wife is the only woman in the opera. There had been women in the cut brothel scene, but Floyd did not want to destroy the balance achieved with one woman in the midst of a group of men.

  • Floyd actually had a completed libretto and opera entirely different from the opera we now know, but decided that it lacked any musical or dramatic excellence, and re-wrote the opera from scratch.

  • The first performance of Of Mice and Men took place in January, 1970 at Seattle Opera, commissioned by then General Director Glynn Ross.
